Beyond the Answers: Celebrating Growth in the Noetic Math Contest
At Vanguard Gifted Academy, we often say that the true value of education isn’t found in the answers students get right, but in the challenging problems they choose to tackle. This year, our students participated in the Noetic Learning Math Contest (NLMC), a national problem-solving competition that is among the largest in the U.S. for elementary and middle school students.
About the Noetic Challenge
The NLMC is designed to encourage students to excel by mastering their problem-solving skills. During the contest, our students applied classroom concepts to solve twenty non-routine math problems that demand creativity, originality, and high-level thinking skills. Every year, more than 30,000 students nationwide participate in this event to compete and grow as mathematicians.
Measured Progress and Resilience
While the national competition offers prestigious awards—such as the National Honor Roll Medal for the top 10% and Honorable Mention Ribbons for the top 50%—our primary focus remains on the "productive struggle" and individual progress.
For many of our students, this was the first math competition of the year, and the growth between the fall and spring sessions was remarkable:
75% of students increased their scores from the fall to the spring.
The average score improvement across these students was nearly 25%.
Several students saw dramatic leaps, including one individual who doubled their score, and another who saw a 40-point increase.
Learning to Tackle the Tough Stuff
Growth in mathematics isn’t always linear. It is about a student looking at a complex problem they don't immediately understand and having the toolkit—and the courage—to try a strategy.
By participating in the NLMC, our students are learning that intelligence is not a fixed trait, but something that expands through effort. Whether they moved their score by 5 points or 50, every student who sat for the contest demonstrated a deeper level of mathematical stamina than they had at the start of the year.
We are incredibly proud of all our participants for receiving their Digital Mathlete Certificates and, more importantly, for proving they are thinkers, problem-solvers, and resilient learners.
The Noetic Math Competition happens at Vanguard Gifted Academy twice each year. There is room at each grade level for students who do not attend Vanguard. We want to make sure that ALL students in our area have access to higher-level math and STEAM experiences. Please contact us if you want to sign up for the fall competition.
