Beyond the Scoreboard: Why Our Students Embrace the "Season of Math"

At Vanguard Gifted Academy, we believe mathematics is far more than a series of formulas to memorize. It is a creative journey of resilience, logic, and discovery. This month, our hallways are buzzing as our scholars enter their annual "Season of Math"—a marathon of national and international competitions designed to push the boundaries of traditional learning.

A Global Stage for Gifted Minds

Our students kicked off the season with the Pi Math Contest (PiMC) and Math Jams, where they tackled complex, non-routine problems—including Cryptarithms and "Magic Potions" during our Pi Day festivities on March 13.

The momentum continues this week with the international Math Kangaroo competition. It all culminates globally on March 25 for World Maths Day, where our students will engage in live mental math battles with peers from over 160 countries.

Redefining "Winning"

While the competitions are exciting, the scoreboard isn't our primary focus. At Vanguard, we view these events as a gym for the mind.

"We teach our students that math competitions are not about placing or winning," says Amy Trujillo, Head of School. "It is about the personal victory of doing better each time. We want our students to walk away feeling confident, knowing they have the tools to tackle 'messy' problems and the persistence to see them through."

The Vanguard Model in Action

This approach is a direct reflection of The Vanguard Model, our educational philosophy that prioritizes a personalized and metacognitive experience. By grouping students by ability and interest rather than age, we allow them to be:

  • Analytical: Delving deep into content and asking probing questions.

  • Creative: Interpreting concepts through the lens of their own personal strengths.

  • Collaborative: Working together to solve "unsolvable" challenges.

Join Us: Upcoming Community Events

We invite the Fox Valley community to experience our unique learning environment firsthand through two upcoming public events:

  • Discovery Day (April 11): Families are invited to explore our collaborative classrooms and see how students generate original ideas to exhibit their learning.

  • Community Math Festival (May 2): A free event open to the public, featuring hands-on games and puzzles designed to make math approachable and fun for everyone.

Enrollment for Summer & Fall 2026

As our community grows, we are excited to announce that enrollment is now open for our 2026 Summer and Fall programs. We serve gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) students in grades K-5, offering a balanced, individualized program that prepares them for the future.
